GasTerra supports unique energy system on Pampus

A fully integrated energy system with biogas and hydrogen is being developed on the fort island.

GasTerra has partnered up with Fort Island Pampus, bringing knowledge of the current and future energy system together nicely.

Fort Island Pampus receives a partnership contribution of €100,000 from GasTerra. A unique energy system is now in place on the site of a previous coalfield. GasTerra feels that this fully integrated energy system running on biogas and hydrogen as energy carriers uniquely showcases the necessity for speeding up the energy transition. A connection has already been made with Ameland, to consider possibly adapting it in a similar way.

Flip van Koten (GasTerra's CFO): "The sustainability ambitions that we have in the Netherlands won’t be achieved by large-scale electrification. We need molecules in the mix. Hydrogen, biomass and smart ways to store this energy are necessary to take that step. On Pampus they show that this is quite possible. Even in an environment where it is challenging to implement this concept."

GasTerra sees this initiative as a perfect opportunity to invest in the island’s sustainability ambitions.

About Pampus

Pampus (Unesco World Heritage Site) is a fort island in the part of the IJmeer within the Gooise Meren municipality. The artificial island was built in 1887 as part of the Defence Line of Amsterdam (Stelling van Amsterdam) to defend the Pampus channel against attacks from the Zuiderzee.
