Happy 2050 - Our future and climate change experienced through virtual reality
The VR film takes the viewer along to a future that, despite what the title suggests, is not a happy one. The main characters in this film are a mouse, a walrus and an octopus, who show how they cope with climate change in their natural habitats. The air is polluted, deserts are increasing in size and plastic is everywhere. The film is funny, but actually it’s not funny at all, exactly as the filmmakers intended. Not to lecture you but to get you thinking… What can we do to prevent such a future?
About the film
The official premiere of Happy 2050 (VRolijk 2050 in Dutch) was during the New Energy Forum on 19 June 2025. GasTerra’s previous collaboration with Strawberry Fields resulted in the film Morrowland (Morgenland in Dutch). This time, we opted for a genuine experience using virtual reality and chose topics other than the energy transition (plastic soup, air pollution and desertification) to focus on the real problem visible through the VR headset: our reckless disregard for nature.
“Happy 2050” aims to use humour, but with a serious undertone, to show a future that can still be prevented. A future that seems absurd until you realise that it is surprisingly close. Just like the film we made earlier, “Morrowland”, this VR experience is available free of charge for educational use.
The film is only in Dutch available at the moment.
