Natural gas is a fossil fuel that was formed over a hundred million years ago. A large gas field – the Groningen gas field – was discovered close to Slochteren in 1959. This was the advent of natural gas in the Netherlands. Today – over a half century later – natural gas is still playing a prominent role in fulfilling our energy requirements, as it is expected to do for decades to come. GasTerra views natural gas as an indispensable link in the transition to a CO2-neutral energy supply. Firstly, it is by far the cleanest of all the fossil fuels. Moreover, natural gas perfectly complements renewable energy sources. As an energy source, natural gas can be deployed flexibly and responsibly whenever the wind isn't blowing or the sun isn't shining.
